Five or six years ago, we had just started settling into our proper post-college/military jobs back home in New York, which seemed like a logical time to figure out what we were doing here. We knew we enjoyed time away from home, being put in the occasional unexpected situation, and digging our way out, and I think it was fair to say we both feared being sucked into the career vortex forever. Somehow, I convinced my unsuspecting wife that a sailboat was just a way to travel for free and bring the hotel with you. So, we made the decision to start saving up a war chest with the goal of finding a boat that could sail us to places we might not otherwise see, ideally without selling our kidneys. After selling a kidney, we started taking a few US Sailing courses, and getting out on anyone's boat we could to get some time on the water.

Then, in 2019 we stumbled upon Shiloh, a 39' pilothouse schooner from 1983. She was old but had been kept in amazing condition, and on a whim we put an offer in for what we could afford. An hour or two later, and much to our surprise, we were boat owners. Since then we've sailed up from the Chesapeake and all around Long Island Sound, and in winter of 2020 embarked on a major refit to prepare the boat for longer distance cruising. The to-do list grows by the day, but we're happy to have something new to focus on as we step away from professional life for a while.

I'm hoping to be able to update this blog more often than never, and I'm hoping it'll be interesting enough that you'll want to come along for the ride. Our (much more current) instagram is linked off the main page, give us a follow if you feel like it!
